The life of a man who succeeded as a weapons maker and failed as a peacemaker.

“Mr. President, I feel I have blood on my hands.”

“I never saw a man in such an extremely nervous state as Oppenheimer. He seemed to feel that the destruction of the entire human race was imminent.”

- Peter J. Kuznick

This is my final poster design to present my quote, I have used the font Gutenberg as i feel it has a lot in common with the essence of what Oppenheimer said; he knew that after his actions/involvement in the creation of the atomic bomb, the world would never be the same place due to the fact there was now a weapon capable of much more large scale destruction that even before. The future of the world would also be altered greatly by the penning of the first bible which is where the Gutenberg font comes from, i used an emphasis on the word death as this is the subject that Oppenheimer was ultimately troubled by and knew he had caused.

While i was experimenting and developing i also compared Oppenheimer to Adolf Hitler as he also has bought about mass genocide, but decided against the direct link as Oppenheimer was not fully aware of what he was doing whereas Hitler definitely was; i did borrow from the style and colour scheme of the cover of Mein Kampf as this used a similar font and aesthetic.

Badge

This is the badge that i have made for myself, the different elements are an illustration of a dove  as i feel that if i were to interpret my being into a animal it may this may be it as i consider myself someone with peace at heart. The abstact square os purely for the visual aspect but can also communicate that i am one of four siblings, the symbol in the middle is the council logo for Stroud, Gloucestershire which is my home and somewhere very dear to me and the texture of this part is grip tape from a skateboard as this is something i love doing and shows the more gritty side of my being.

GAME PLAY

I decided to create a casual drinking game that adults can play at parties or before going out, based on a 'Night out in London' and split up into North, South, East and west with each quarter containing stops that represent places you may go on an evening in that respective area. I used simple, clean cut visuals as the game is aimed at young adults mainly so a sophisticated aesthetic was what i intended, a laid back fun board game that isn't to be taken to seriously.

WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN?

Everybody involved in graphic design will all have their own separate, influenced or not impression of what graphic design actually is, what it contains, the skills that it incorporates and what it means to call yourself a graphic designer, and this is what makes it such a unique and expansive subject. many designers will still tend to try and use traditional creative techniques such as mark making and cut and paste styles as (i believe) these hold the most crisp & effective aesthetics and it is a lot more rewarding to create using hands on methods. The technological advances that have occurred over the last 20 years has meant that the media used to produce design is now broader and more versatile, personally learning my trade in the 21st century i think is more exciting than ever before, the opportunities to learn to use software that lets you create almost anything you want visually and be able to pick and choose from techniques that i pick up from those teaching me and others around me.

For this project i have produced a poster containing 6 examples of views that people have on the subject, or just their interpretation of the question, from a competition pool on flickr in which participants have submitted artwork and the won deemed best would win. I thought that this was a good way of getting a diverse range of opinions to recreate in my own way, there are some very interesting comments and this when communicated graphically puts across my own view that graphic design is different for everybody involved in it and thats what makes it so unique.

FAVOURITE THINGS

This project is about my favourite things. Material, sentimental, human or simply memories, we were asked to identify what it was about these things that made them special to us and communicate this graphically. After thinking about and listing some of these things, i came to the conclusion that my favourite things were often people who i idolise for various reasons and despite the fact there are many material things that i cherish the ones that came to mind when first barnstorming were more likely people and memories. I produced a set of 6 representations of these things using a manual stencil and spray paint technique, my favourite things are imprinted on my mind and they tend to regularly be on my mind whether it be visually or just thoughts so I’ve tried to create a very bold aesthetic so the same imprint is left on the demographic as a simple design communicates that these things are timeless to me. I took the images from the internet and created the stencil effect using photoshop, the black on gold works well and represents the significance of these things to me, the finish could be better on some of them and the Vans shoe did not come out as i had hoped due to the intricacy of the stencil.

Nas - Has been my my favourite rapper for a while and hip-hop is the genre i am most into, i listen to him almost every day.
J Dilla - His music has stuck a cord with me over time, his touch and ear for sampling and drums is amazing and his legacy will never be forgotten.
Vans - For as long as i can remember i have worn Vans shoes for skateboarding and in everyday life, the waffle sole is one of my favourite aspects and is good for performance while skateboarding, i also love the whole overall aesthetic of the shoes and sole in particular.
Skateboarding - Although i have not skated as much as in previous years recently it has always been something I’ve loved, learning new tricks, spending time with friends and the overall culture is a part of who i am. This particular skater is a favourite of mine also, Andrew Reynolds performing the trick he is known for along with his style of lifting his legs up high.
Thrilla in Manila - When it comes to entertainment, for me this is the pinnacle, the fight is an epic display of sporting excellence and i have watched it over and over again, the intensity and will power of both fighters is empowering and a spectacle to withhold, i also think the images and stills such as this one are iconic in sports history.
Kenny Powers - Eastbound and down is my favourite TV show, Danny McBrides brand of comedy is hilarious and his character is outrageous and narcissistic and his appearance and mannerisms are timeless entertainment.

MIRRORS

With this project the idea was to tap into our home, the meaning of the word to us and everything surrounding what we considered home whether it be the place that we were bought up or the place that we live now.  I felt that home for me was Stroud, Gloucestershire which is the place i was bought up, my family being part of this and the memories that i have of the actual house i grew up in and the spaces around, although i now live in London i consider myself a country person. I gathered various items that are in my room currently and that hold a significance in representing the person i am while im in that space, as i felt that my actual room is effectively my home while in London as the house i live in has no living area so i spend most of my time there. I went on to make a design that is a visual map of myself and my home, including images of myself and my family that are some of my fondest memories and are good representations of my time growing up in Gloucestershire and the people around me who i feel have influenced me more than anybody else,  i used circular images to portray the idea of through the keyhole look at my home.
